Asa-Noir’s roots are deep in the Finnish town of Hämeenlinna, where guitarist Ville and drummer Ilkka joined to play together in the year 2004. Inspired by the Norwegian black metal scene and fascinated by Norse mythology and Gothic horror fiction, such as E.A. Poe and H.P. Lovecraft, they used this combination to create what came to be the foundations of what Asa-Noir is today: when the current line-up of six and their different kinds of musical influences found their way together, the band started evolving further away from black metal and more towards a style of their own, whilst maintaining the dark and aggressive sound and the modern, perversely twisted view on Norse mythology that has been characteristic of them from the beginning.
In Asa-Noir’s music one can hear symphonic orchestrations, beautifully dark piano sections, eerie and powerful post-industrial –style synthesizers, technical and rhythmical death metal and dark metal guitar riffs and leads and vocals both brutal and clean – with lyrics revolving around the Norse deity Loki portrayed in a more horrific fashion. The result is aggressive, complex and rich on one hand, but smooth, dark and cold on the other. Now, having released their debut EP Reforming Heathen Origins, only one thing is certain – Asa-Noir will not cease to evolve and develop even further.
