Time To Burn started out in Clermont-Ferrand, France, under the name Waxx. Soon, the bands members relocated to Paris where they found themselves a steady line-up and started writing music as Time To Burn. They released two eps already on their own expenses, called Héliotropisme (2003) and Burn The Lie Down (2004). Some months ago they signed to Basement Apes records (Submerge) which resulted in the release of this debut album called Starting Point.
Time To Burn is the French answer to the current wave of postrock metal bands. Influenced by Isis, Cult Of Luna, Neurosis and Breach, Time To Burn is one of these bands that mixes the most extreme noisy sludge metal with melancholic guitar melodies. Some parts, like the end of Jelly Roll, reveal Time To Burnâ?™s hardcore background. Theyâ?™re very good in creating the dark and moody atmosphere thatâ?™s present on many of todayâ?™s post-rock or so called post-metal bands. On top of that, theyâ?™re influenced by more chaotic bands as Keelhaul or Knut as well.
The band never reaches the quality of any of the aforementioned bands however. Thereâ?™s very few real creativity or originality to be found on Starting Point and the riffing and production is mostly too weak to make Time To Burn a real highlight in todayâ?™s heavy underground scene. The first two songs are good, but after that quality falls down to right above mediocre and I can never look at Time To Burn as a band with a face of its own. In the end Iâ?™d just go back to my Isis, Neurosis or Knut records.
